In a landmark move for British television, Sky has announced the launch of Saturday Night Live UK, a local adaptation of the iconic American sketch comedy show. Set to premiere in 2026, the series will air live on Saturday nights via Sky Max and the streaming platform NOW, bringing the renowned live comedy format to UK audiences for the first time.
The UK version will be executive-produced by SNL creator Lorne Michaels, in collaboration with Broadway Video and Universal Television Alternative Studio’s UK production team. Filmed in London, the show aims to replicate the fast-paced, live format of its American counterpart, featuring an all-British cast of comedians, celebrity hosts, and musical guests.
Cécile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The show has discovered and nurtured countless comedy and musical talents over the years, and we are thrilled to be partnering with Lorne and the SNL team to bring an all-British version of the … UK audiences next year—all live from London on Saturday night!”
While the cast and premiere date are yet to be announced, the adaptation marks a significant expansion of the SNL brand, which celebrated its 50. Previous international versions have aired in countries including Germany, Spain, Italy, China, Japan, South Korea, and Egypt.
This initiative also follows in the footsteps of Saturday Live, a British television comedy and music show that aired from 1985 to 1988, which was inspired by the SNL format but had no direct connection to the American program.
As anticipation builds, viewers can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved sketch comedy format, tailored to British sensibilities and humor. Further details regarding the show’s lineup and premiere will be revealed in the coming months.
