Leaked Footage of CW’s Canceled Live-Action Powerpuff Girls is Some Sort of Weird Fever Dream

Featuring Donald Faison as Professor Utonium

Leaked footage from The CW’s canceled live-action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls has surfaced online, reigniting discussions about the ill-fated project. The series, titled Powerpuff, aimed to depict Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as disillusioned twenty-somethings grappling with the loss of their childhood to crime-fighting. The leaked trailer, believed to be from an unreleased pilot episode, showcases the protagonists confronting personal challenges, including Bubbles’ struggle with alcohol and Buttercup’s aversion to traditional gender norms. Yeah, you read that right.

The project boasted a notable creative team, including writer Diablo Cody and producer Greg Berlanti. The cast featured Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Yana Perrault as Buttercup, and Donald Faison as Professor Utonium. Despite the talent involved, the series faced significant setbacks. In 2021, a script leak led to widespread criticism on social media, with many expressing concerns over the show’s direction and tone.

Following the negative reception, The CW opted to rework the pilot. However, production challenges persisted, culminating in the official cancellation of Powerpuff in 2023.

The emergence of the leaked footage has sparked renewed debate among fans and critics. While some appreciate the attempt to present a mature take on the beloved animated series, others feel the adaptation strayed too far from the original’s charm. The rapid pacing and condensed plotlines in the trailer have been likened to a movie rather than a television series.

Warner Bros. has been taking the leaked footage off of YouTube, but you can still find the footage here.

Animated Reboot

In the wake of Powerpuff‘s cancellation, Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe has announced plans for an animated reboot of The Powerpuff Girls, with original creator Craig McCracken at the helm. This development offers fans hope for a revival that stays true to the spirit of the classic series.

Are you sad we’re going to miss out on CW’s surreal live-action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls?
