Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for Good Fortune, an upcoming R-rated comedy directed and written by Aziz Ansari in his feature directorial debut. The film stars Keanu Reeves as Gabriel, a well-meaning but inept guardian angel who attempts to improve the lives of a struggling gig worker, Arj (played by Ansari), and a wealthy venture capitalist, Jeff (Seth Rogen), by swapping their lives. The plan backfires, leading to comedic chaos and Gabriel losing his wings. The ensemble cast also includes Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, Sherry Cola, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
A Heavenly Comedy with a Social Twist
Good Fortune blends absurd humor with sharp social commentary, exploring themes of wealth disparity and the pursuit of happiness. Gabriel’s misguided attempt to teach Arj a lesson about the pitfalls of wealth leads to unexpected consequences, highlighting the complexities of human desires and societal structures.
The film marks a departure for Reeves, known for his action roles, as he embraces a comedic character navigating celestial bureaucracy and human follies. Ansari’s direction aims to revitalize the adult comedy genre in theaters.
Good Fortune emerged following the suspension of Ansari’s previous project, Being Mortal, due to production issues. Determined to bring a fresh comedy to the big screen, Ansari collaborated with longtime friend Seth Rogen to develop this new venture. The production faced its own challenges, including a Writers Guild of America strike and a knee injury sustained by Reeves during filming. Despite these hurdles, the team persevered, with Reeves continuing to work through his injury, showcasing his dedication to the project.
Ansari’s commitment to authenticity extended beyond the script; he reportedly cooked Indian food for Reeves to build rapport and ease the actor into his directorial vision. This personal touch fostered a collaborative environment on set, contributing to the film’s unique blend of humor and heart.
Good Fortune is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on October 17, 2025. Fans can look forward to a film that combines laugh-out-loud moments with poignant reflections on life’s unexpected turns.
