Jon Favreau is Resurrecting Disney’s Long-Forgotten Character ‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’

Will blend live-action and animation, a la Roger Rabbit

Disney is set to revive one of its earliest characters, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, in a new series helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon Favreau. The project, currently in development for Disney+, will blend live-action and animation to bring the mischievous rabbit back to the screen.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit holds a significant place in Disney’s history. Created by Walt Disney in 1927, Oswald starred in 27 animated shorts before Universal Pictures assumed control of the character in 1928. This loss prompted Walt Disney to create Mickey Mouse, who would go on to become the company’s iconic mascot.

In 2006, Disney CEO Bob Iger prioritized reacquiring the rights to Oswald, successfully bringing the character back into the Disney fold. Since then, Oswald has made sporadic appearances, including in video games and theme park merchandise, but has not been featured in a dedicated series.

Jon Favreau, known for his work on Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and The Mandalorian, is both writing and producing the upcoming series as he continues to strengthen his bonds with Disney. The show aims to reintroduce Oswald to modern audiences, combining live-action and animated elements in a style reminiscent of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and the recent Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers film.
