Apple TV+ has released the official teaser trailer for Chief of War, an epic historical drama series starring Jason Momoa as Kaʻiana, a Native Hawaiian warrior striving to unify the islands prior to Western colonization in the late 18th century. The nine-episode series is set to premiere globally on August 1, 2025, with the first two episodes, followed by weekly releases every Friday through September 19.
A Passion Project Rooted in Hawaiian Heritage
Co-created by Momoa and Thomas Paʻa Sibbett, both of Native Hawaiian descent, Chief of War presents the unification and colonization of Hawaiʻi from an indigenous perspective. Momoa, who also serves as writer, executive producer, and director of the season finale, describes the series as his personal Braveheart or Last of the Mohicans.
The series features a predominantly Polynesian cast, including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikaleʻo, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes. Justin Chon directs the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer alongside Doug Jung, who also acts as showrunner.
Chief of War promises a compelling exploration of Hawaiian history, culture, and resilience, offering viewers a unique perspective on the islands’ past.
