Universal Pictures is celebrating the 40th anniversary of John Hughes’s seminal teen drama The Breakfast Club with a limited theatrical re-release set for September 7 and 10. Fans can now purchase advance tickets through Fandango and various participating theater websites.
Timeless Classic
The film follows a diverse group of five high school students—Claire the princess (Molly Ringwald), Andrew the athlete (Emilio Estevez), Brian the brain (Anthony Michael Hall), Allison the basket case (Ally Sheedy), and John the criminal (Judd Nelson)—who bond during a Saturday detention.
Despite its modest $1 million budget, The Breakfast Club earned over $51 million globally and left an enduring legacy as a definitive coming-of-age film.
Jim Orr, Universal’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, emphasized its timeless portrayal of identity, alienation, and connection—appealing to audiences across generations.
Cast Reunion & Reflections on Legacy
Earlier this year, the main cast—including Ringwald, Estevez, Hall, Sheedy, and Nelson—reunited publicly in Chicago for the first time in four decades at C2E2, sharing fond memories and respectful reflections on the late John Hughes’s character-driven approach.
At the panel, Molly Ringwald acknowledged The Breakfast Club‘s cultural significance but expressed that it no longer aligns with contemporary values, citing a lack of diversity and inclusion. She discouraged the idea of a straight remake, preferring new, inspired stories.
