​HBO has unveiled the official trailer for its forthcoming political documentary series, The Dark Money Game, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. This two-part series delves into the pervasive influence of undisclosed political funding in the United States, marking 15 years since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.​
The Dark Money Game comprises two feature-length documentaries: Ohio Confidential and Wealth of the Wicked. Both films investigate the intricate networks of anonymous donations and their impact on American democracy.
Ohio Confidential
Premiering on Tuesday, April 15, this installment examines a significant corruption case in Ohio. The narrative centers on the mysterious death of a political lobbyist, which uncovers a $61 million slush fund allegedly used to influence legislation and secure corporate bailouts. The film features insights from journalists, former FBI agents, and legal experts who shed light on the case’s complexities.​
Wealth of the Wicked
Debuting on Wednesday, April 16, this documentary traces the evolution of campaign finance laws, from the establishment of the Federal Election Commission in 1975 to the ramifications of the Citizens United ruling. It explores how religious groups and special interest organizations have leveraged financial contributions to sway political outcomes and judicial appointments.
Both documentaries will air on HBO at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on their respective dates and will be available for streaming on Max starting April 15.
The series draws inspiration from Jane Mayer’s book, Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right. Mayer, along with other prominent figures such as former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold and former Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, provides commentary throughout the documentaries.
