HBO Max Returns: Warner Bros. Discovery Rebrands Streaming Service Back to Its Original Name

In a significant branding reversal, Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that its streaming platform, currently known as Max, will revert to its former name, HBO Max, this summer. The decision comes two years after the service was rebranded from HBO Max to Max in 2023 following the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc.

The initial rebranding aimed to unify the diverse content offerings from both companies, combining HBO’s acclaimed original programming with Discovery’s extensive library of reality and lifestyle content. However, the move was met with criticism, as the Max brand lacked the strong association with quality that HBO had cultivated over decades.

“Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead,” stated Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

The rebranding also signals a strategic shift in content focus. Warner Bros. Discovery plans to prioritize high-quality, prestige programming, aligning with HBO’s legacy. This includes a renewed emphasis on big-budget films, popular series, and exclusive docuseries, while moving away from underperforming genres.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, noted that the name HBO Max better reflects the service’s strong content offering and brand promise.

Since the initial rebranding to Max, the platform has experienced significant growth, adding 22 million new subscribers. With the return to the HBO Max name, Warner Bros. Discovery aims to bolster the service’s appeal and reach its goal of 150 million subscribers by 2026.

The updated HBO Max branding is expected to roll out this summer, coinciding with the platform’s fall lineup for 2025.

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to reinstate the HBO Max name underscores the enduring value of strong brand identity and the company’s commitment to delivering premium content to its subscribers.

Fans have been having a field day with the all too obvious choice to go back to HBO Max, and HBO itself has been getting in on the joke over on X (formerly Twitter).
