HBO has officially announced the casting of the three lead roles in its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series. After an extensive search, newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout have been selected to portray Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, respectively. The series aims to provide a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga, with each season dedicated to a single novel. Filming is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, with a premiere expected in 2026.
Introducing the New Stars of Hogwarts
- Dominic McLaughlin: Cast as the titular character, McLaughlin is a British actor making his screen debut. He is also set to appear in the upcoming UK family comedy film Grow and a BBC action-adventure series.
- Arabella Stanton: Taking on the role of Hermione Granger, Stanton brings stage experience from London’s West End, having played Matilda in Matilda The Musical and Control in Starlight Express.
- Alastair Stout: Portraying Ron Weasley, Stout is a newcomer to acting, with his previous experience limited to a commercial for Jersey Royal potatoes.
The casting process was extensive, with over 30,000 children auditioning for the roles. Francesca Gardiner, the show’s showrunner and executive producer, expressed enthusiasm about the new cast, stating, “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”
In addition to the lead trio, HBO has announced several other key cast members: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The series is being developed under the guidance of showrunner Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) and director Mark Mylod. J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer, ensuring the series remains true to the original material. The show is slated to premiere on HBO in 2026.
