HBO is bringing the Harry Potter universe back to screens with an ambitious new series adaptation: seven seasons, one for each book, offering a faithful and richly detailed retelling of J.K. Rowling’s iconic saga.
Each season will adapt a single Harry Potter novel—starting with Sorcerer’s Stone and culminating in Deathly Hallows—allowing for in-depth character arcs and magical lore previously trimmed from the films.
Production commenced in July 2025 at the original Leavesden Studios; the premiere is set for early 2027 on HBO in the U.S. and later on Max internationally.
Cast & Creative Team
Lead Trio: Dominic McLaughlin is Harry, Arabella Stanton portrays Hermione, and Alastair Stout plays Ron—each selected from over 30,000 auditions.
Adult Ensemble: John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Snape), Nick Frost (Hagrid), Luke Thallon (Quirrell), Paul Whitehouse (Filch) and others round out the Hogwarts community.
Behind the Camera: Showrunner Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) and director/executive producer Mark Mylod lead the production, with J.K. Rowling, David Heyman, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts serving as executive producers.
The season-per-book format allows focus on subplots, Hogwarts life, and secondary characters (like Peeves and the Black family) that were omitted in the films. HBO and Rowling emphasize a faithful adaptation—down to dialogue and book-specific moments, promising richer storytelling.
HBO’s Harry Potter series is gearing up to be a landmark adaptation, offering fans an immersive, season-by-season journey through the full depth of Rowling’s wizarding world. With a carefully selected cast, auteur-led production, and full commitment to the books, this series may become the definitive screen interpretation. Mark your calendars for early 2027.
