FX Gears Up for ‘Very Young Frankenstein’ Comedy Series with Mel Brooks Executive Producing

FX is developing a bold new comedy series titled Very Young Frankenstein, a fresh reboot-spinoff inspired by Mel Brooks’s classic 1974 film Young Frankenstein. The show is currently “nearing a pilot order”, signaling that FX may soon greenlight it for production.

Creative Team & Executive Producers

Mel Brooks, approaching 100 years old, returns as an executive producer, lending his signature comic vision.

Joining him from FX’s What We Do in the Shadows:

  • Taika Waititi is set to direct the pilot
  • Stefani Robinson will serve as showrunner and writer
  • Garrett Basch also joins as executive producer
  • Kevin Salter and Michael Gruskoff round out the producing team, with 20th Television handling production.

Minimal plot details are available. The series is billed as inspired by the original, leaning into its horror-comedy roots. FX and the creative team have remained tight-lipped, but fans can expect echoes of Brooks’s iconic tone – perhaps exploring new angles on the Frankenstein legacy.

Young Frankenstein—directed by Brooks and starring Gene Wilder—was universally acclaimed and continues to influence pop culture nearly 50 years later.

Nearing his 99th birthday, Brooks continues to leave a creative mark, not only on this project but also on sequels like Spaceballs 2, proving his enduring relevance.

Very Young Frankenstein represents a delightful convergence of classic satire and modern TV comedy. With Mel Brooks’s blessing and creative input, joined by the inventive talents behind What We Do in the Shadows, this FX series aims to rekindle the spirit of Young Frankenstein while carving its own lane in horror-comedy television.
