Doug Liman Named Director for Feature Adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand

Paramount Pictures has officially tapped acclaimed filmmaker Doug Liman to direct the first big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s post-pandemic epic, The Stand.

Why Liman?

Known for helming action-packed hits like The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman is expected to bring kinetic energy and scope to King’s vast narrative. After two TV adaptations (1994 & 2020), this marks the franchise’s first attempt at condensing King’s massive 1,153-page novel into a standalone theatrical experience.

What to Expect from The Stand

Set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by the “Captain Trips” super flu, the survivors split into factions—embodied by Mother Abigail (good) and the sinister Randall Flagg (evil)—culminating in a climactic showdown.

Liman aims for a self-contained film that captures the essence of King’s battle-of-wills epic without planning multiple sequels.

The project is still in early development with no script finalized. Paramount is aggressively moving forward, but the scale of the source material presents significant creative challenges. Previous attempts—including those by George A. Romero, Ben Affleck, and David Yates—were shelved. Josh Boone’s earlier four-film plan also fell apart over time.

Paramount is expected to soon bring on a screenwriter capable of distilling the novel’s complexity into a two-to-three-hour screenplay. No casting or release dates have been set. Liman’s involvement marks a major development, but significant scripting and planning lie ahead.

Doug Liman’s involvement marks a bold step in finally translating The Stand into a cinematic event. With his pedigree in blockbuster storytelling and Paramount’s renewed commitment, fans may soon see King’s epic reimagined for the big screen—condensed yet ambitious, action-driven yet emotionally resonant.
