For the first time, the genuine screen-used Darth Vader lightsaber from The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) is set to go up for auction. Propstore will showcase this iconic prop ahead of the September 4–6, 2025 Entertainment Memorabilia Auction in Los Angeles, with a potential price tag of $1–3 million.
A Legendary Prop of Cinematic History
Wielded by David Prowse with stuntman Bob Anderson, this saber features prominently in the Cloud City duel and final confrontations—making it the only authenticated hero lightsaber from the original trilogy ever sold publicly.
Built from a British press-camera flash handle, the saber was detailed with plastic grips, calculator circuit boards, wiring, and a wooden blade—later enhanced with rotoscope effects. Its battle-worn condition further confirms its cinematic authenticity.
Propstore’s COO Brandon Alinger calls it “a grail-level piece, worthy of the finest collections in the world,” likening it to cinema’s equivalent of Dorothy’s ruby slippers.
It will be at an August press showcase in London, New York, and Beverly Hills to allow fans and collectors to view the relic in person.
The lightsaber is a centerpiece of Propstore’s September sale in Los Angeles, coinciding with the 45th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. Also featured are iconic items like Indiana Jones’ whip and Sauron’s helmet.
