Ari Aster Has Offered a Chaotic First Look at His New Pandemic-Era Thriller ‘Eddington’

A24 has released the official trailer for Eddington, the latest film from director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar). Set during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, the film explores escalating tensions in the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico.

The story centers on a conflict between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), which spirals into community unrest. Emma Stone portrays Louise Cross, the sheriff’s wife, while Austin Butler plays preacher Vernon Jefferson Peak. The ensemble cast also includes Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, and Micheal Ward.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s intense atmosphere, featuring scenes of social media doomscrolling, political discord, and civil unrest. Aster’s signature unsettling tone is evident, blending psychological intensity with contemporary political themes.

This new movie sees Ari Aster teaming up once again with Joaquin Phoenix, as the highly divisive Beau is Afraid, released in 2023. It also marks his third production with A24, as they continue their strong relationship.

Eddington will premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May, competing for the Palme d’Or, before its theatrical release on July 18, 2025.
