Apple TV+ Premieres A Powerful New Documentary ‘Deaf President Now!’

Apple TV+ has released Deaf President Now!, a compelling new documentary that chronicles the historic 1988 student-led protests at Gallaudet University, the world’s only university for the Deaf. Directed by Deaf activist Nyle DiMarco and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, the film debuted on May 16, 2025, and is now available for streaming exclusively on Apple TV+.

A Landmark Movement in Deaf and Civil Rights History

Deaf President Now! delves into the eight-day protest sparked when Gallaudet’s board of trustees appointed a hearing president over several qualified Deaf candidates. The documentary highlights the efforts of four student leaders—Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, Jerry Covell, Greg Hlibok, and Tim Rarus—whose activism led to the appointment of Dr. I. King Jordan as the university’s first Deaf president. This pivotal event not only transformed Gallaudet University but also played a significant role in advancing the rights of Deaf individuals and contributed to the momentum leading to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

Innovative Storytelling Through Deaf Perspectives

The documentary employs a unique “Deaf Point of View” narrative technique, combining archival footage, scripted reenactments, and immersive sound design to authentically represent the Deaf experience. This approach allows viewers to engage deeply with the sensory and emotional aspects of the movement.

Critical Acclaim and Cultural Impact

Premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Deaf President Now! received widespread acclaim and was a runner-up for the Festival Favorite Award. The film holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its powerful storytelling and historical significance.

The documentary not only educates audiences about a crucial moment in Deaf history but also underscores the importance of representation and self-advocacy in effecting social change. As Nyle DiMarco stated, the film aims to “raise awareness, restore a forgotten piece of history, and inspire future activism.”
