A Release Date has Finally Been Set for ‘Spinal Tap II’ to Hit Theaters

Rob Reiner’s original This Is Spinal Tap film from 1984 has become a thing of legends and is considered the one that brought us a whole new sub-genre: mockumentary.

Its sequel, Spinal Tap II has been in preparation for a while now—according to Deadline, the film—originally set for a March 2024 release but delayed due to the Hollywood strikes of 2023—has a release date set for Friday, September 12, 2025.

In a statement, Reiner, who directed the movie and reprises his role as Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, said, “So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy.”

Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are returning to play the fictional members of Spinal Tap: David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls, respectively. The movie will also feature Paul MCartney, Elton John, and others.

The original Spinal Tap film satirizes the behavior and musical pretensions of rock bands and the perceived hagiographic tendencies of rock documentaries such as The Song Remains the Same (1976) and The Last Waltz (1978), and follows the similar All You Need Is Cash (1978) by the Rutles. Most of its dialogue was improvised and dozens of hours were filmed.

Spinal Tap II is set to continue that epic tale, it’s release couldn’t come sooner.
