Google has deepened its commitment to wearable tech with a $100 million investment in Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster, acquiring approximately a 4% stake in its parent company, IICombined—marking a strategic step as the tech giant pivots toward stylish, AI-powered smart glasses.
The investment is integral to Google’s new smart eyewear initiative built on the Android XR platform, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, and produced in collaboration with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker.
Gentle Monster—renowned for its bold, avant-garde eyewear and immersive retail experiences—is expected to co-design the highly anticipated glasses, positioning them as fashion accessories with built-in AI and AR features, not just gadgets.
Fresh Approach After Google Glass Flop
Google’s 2013 attempt with Google Glass failed due to poor design, high cost, and privacy concerns. This renewed effort marks a shift: smart glasses as fashion statements, not just tech novelty. Google CEO Sundar Pichai underscored this at I/O, stating: “Smart glasses should be fashion objects that help the user forget they are wearing them.”
Gentle Monster’s Brand Power
In 2024, the company generated 789.1 billion won (~$571 million) in revenue with operating profit more than doubling from the previous year. Its valuation has climbed to 3.6 trillion won (~$2.7 billion)—triple its 2020 value when it achieved unicorn status.
Founded in 2011 in Seoul, Gentle Monster has grown into a global luxury eyewear brand with over 81 stores across more than 14 countries and a cult following among Gen Z and celebrities like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Gigi Hadid.
The first Google‑Gentle Monster smart glasses are expected to hit the market in early 2026, featuring AI-driven capabilities like real-time translation, contextual overlays, navigation, and voice assistance.
By leveraging Gentle Monster’s fashion credibility, Google aims to compete directly with Meta’s Ray‑Ban smart glasses, Apple’s rumored upcoming hardware, and Snap’s Specs, all vying to mainstream smart eyewear as both function and fashion.
