A highly coveted pair of Nike Air Mag sneakers, inspired by the iconic Back to the Future Part II film, is being auctioned off by Goldin for a staggering $61,000, including the buyer’s premium. This particular pair, numbered 17 out of the limited 89 produced in 2016, features the groundbreaking self-lacing E.A.R.L. (Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing) technology, bringing to life the futuristic footwear envisioned in the 1989 movie.
What sets this pair apart is the inclusion of autographs from three pivotal figures associated with the Nike Mag’s legacy: Michael J. Fox (who portrayed Marty McFly), Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown), and Tinker Hatfield (the legendary Nike designer behind the Mag). Rather than signing the sneakers directly, their signatures adorn a clear panel within the oversized display case, preserving the shoes’ pristine condition while adding immense collector value.
Originally released in 2016, the Nike Mag was limited to just 89 pairs, making them one of the rarest sneakers ever produced. The 2016 release was particularly notable for incorporating the self-lacing technology, a feature absent from the earlier 2011 version. Proceeds from the original sales benefited the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, further cementing the sneaker’s significance in both pop culture and philanthropic circles.
The auction is part of Goldin’s Spring Goldin 100 event, which showcases some of the most sought-after collectibles in the market. Bidding for this exceptional pair started at $50,000 and will conclude on June 14, 2025.
This sale underscores the enduring appeal of the Nike Air Mag, a sneaker that seamlessly blends cinematic history, innovative technology, and cultural significance. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, owning such a piece is akin to possessing a tangible slice of the future imagined decades ago.
