Princes’ iconic film and album Purple Rain is set to make its musical theater debut. The production, a pre-Broadway world premiere, will take place in Prince’s hometown—Minneapolis—running from October 16 to November 16, 2025, at the historic State Theatre.
Casting the Legends
Kris Kollins
A singer-songwriter from Washington, D.C.—has been cast to bring Prince’s character, “The Kid,” to life in his professional stage debut. Discovered on social media, Kollins brings charisma and musical talent to the role.
Rachel Webb
Known for her performances in & Juliet, will star as Apollonia. Her dynamic presence redefined the character during auditions and inspired the creative team’s direction.
Creative Team
- Book & Direction: The script is adapted by Pulitzer Prize winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, with Lileana Blain-Cruz directing.
- Music & Choreography: Prince’s timeless songs score the musical, with Tony winner Jason Michael Webb supervising and arranging. Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, longtime collaborators with Prince, serve as music advisers, and Ebony Williams is choreographing the production.
Minneapolis isn’t just the setting—it’s the heart and soul of Purple Rain. The Minneapolis premiere roots the production in the city that shaped Prince’s sound and story. It also functions as a test run before an anticipated Broadway transfer.
