The acclaimed Pokémon Fossil Museum exhibition, which has captivated audiences across Japan since 2021, made its North American debut at Chicago’s Field Museum on May 22, 2026. This marks the first time the immersive exhibit will be showcased outside of Japan, offering fans a unique blend of science and fantasy.
Bridging Pokémon Lore and Paleontology
Developed collaboratively by Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science and The Pokémon Company, the exhibition juxtaposes life-size models of fossil Pokémon with real-world fossils. Visitors can expect to see displays featuring Pokémon like Tyrantrum and Archeops alongside actual fossils of creatures such as SUE the T. rex and the Chicago Archaeopteryx, facilitating a comparative exploration of prehistoric life and its fictional counterparts.
The exhibit is designed to be both educational and engaging, featuring characters like “Professor Fossil” and “Excavator Pikachu” who guide visitors through the displays. Interactive elements aim to teach attendees about fossil excavation and the science behind paleontology, making it an enriching experience for all ages.
Given the popularity of the exhibition in Japan, where it attracted over 138,000 visitors at a single venue , early planning is recommended for those interested in attending the Chicago debut.
