Mattel, the iconic toy brand behind Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Uno, has entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI aimed at bringing artificial intelligence into playrooms—and boardrooms—by introducing AI-powered toys, digital experiences, and operational tools.
Mattel plans to embed AI—powered by OpenAI’s advanced technology—into its future toys and games, promising interactive, age-appropriate play that emphasizes innovation, privacy, and safety.
The first AI-enabled Mattel product is expected later this year, though the exact brand—Barbie, Hot Wheels, Uno, or another IP—hasn’t been selected yet.
Initial releases will be aimed at ages 13+, with strict safeguards to address past challenges like those faced with Hello Barbie.
After proving AI success with one or two products, expect the initiative to extend across Mattel’s wider brand catalogue—Barbie, Hot Wheels, and more.
Beyond toys, Mattel will adopt ChatGPT Enterprise internally to overhaul workflows—including creative ideation, product development, and fan engagement.
OpenAI’s Bradley Lightcap described this as a move to “enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation at scale.”
Seismic Shifts
Amid weakening demand in the toy market, Mattel is leaning into tech-enabled play to revitalize its core business. This shift from basic voice-actuated toys to fully generative AI experiences—imagine smart companions based on Barbie or AI-enhanced Uno gameplay—could represent a monumental shift in the future of toymaking.
This game-changing collaboration marks Mattel’s leap into AI-driven play and OpenAI’s expansion into consumer products. By embedding generative AI into beloved toy universes—and enhancing internal workflows—both companies are shaping the future of play and creativity. Expect the first “smart toy” to arrive later in 2025, complete with generative AI smarts, user safety, and global toy-lovers’ excitement.
