Lucasfilm Celebrates Studio Ghibli’s Influence with Special Art Collection at Star Wars Celebration Japan

At the recent Star Wars Celebration in Japan, Lucasfilm paid homage to the iconic animation style of Studio Ghibli by unveiling exclusive tribute artwork. This special pieces capture the essence of both universes, blending the whimsical charm of Ghibli with the epic saga of Star Wars.

The tribute art showcases beloved Star Wars characters reimagined through the lens of Studio Ghibli‘s distinct aesthetic. Attendees were treated to visuals that evoke the emotional depth and intricate artistry synonymous with Ghibli films, seamlessly integrated into the Star Wars galaxy.

It was a delightful surprise for Star Wars Celebration Japan attendees, as the Anime & Manga Pavilion is the only place in the world to see the special collection.

Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni contributed a lively painting of Ahsoka inspired by Princess Mononoke. In the accompanying label he writes, “When I went to create Ahsoka Tano I knew I wanted to imbue her with a bit of San. So this is why Ahsoka has two “wolf fangs” on her cheeks, in homage to Miyazaki’s film.”

Lucasfilm Senior Vice President Doug Chiang added two new works, one a series of sketches in ballpoint pen and the other in watercolors – which was a fresh change of media for the veteran artist. “Even though I haven’t painted traditionally in over 25 years, I felt compelled to pick up my old brushes and create a watercolor in honor of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli,” Chiang writes in the label.

Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 Announced

In addition to the tribute art, Lucasfilm announced the upcoming release of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, set to premiere on Disney+ on October 29, 2025. This anthology series continues to explore diverse storytelling styles, with contributions from renowned Japanese animation studios. The new volume will feature nine episodes, including continuations of fan-favorite stories like “The Duel,” “The Village Bride,” and “The Ninth Jedi.”

Expanding the Visions Universe

Building on the success of the anthology, Lucasfilm also introduced Star Wars: Visions Presents, a new initiative aimed at expanding selected stories into longer, more detailed narratives. The first of these, The Ninth Jedi, will receive its own spinoff series premiering in 2026.
