The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, co-founded by filmmaker George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is nearing completion in Exposition Park, with plans to officially open in 2026. The museum made headlines during San Diego Comic-Con 2025, where Lucas delivered his first-ever appearance at the event to unveil its mission and design.
A “Temple to the People’s Art”
At Comic-Con, Lucas described the museum as “a temple to the people’s art”, emphasizing its dedication to narrative storytelling through comics, illustration, painting, film, photography, and more. Joined on stage by Guillermo del Toro and Lucasfilm designer Doug Chiang (moderated by Queen Latifah), Lucas stressed the institution’s cultural and educational mission.
A Vast Collection of Narrative Art
Housing over 40,000 works, the museum will feature a vast mix of items:
- Iconic artworks by Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Jack Kirby, Robert Crumb, and Kara Walker
- Original Star Wars and Indiana Jones artifacts: concept art, props, and costumes
- Early Peanuts and Black Panther comic pages, alongside historic illustration pieces like Rockwell’s Four Freedoms
Acquisitions also include the Separate Cinema Archive and Robert Colescott’s historic paintings, underscoring a commitment to preserving underrepresented stories.
Futuristic Design Meets L.A. Green Space
Designed by MAD Architects (Ma Yansong) with Stantec as executive architect, the 300,000-square-foot, five-story structure stands out with curved geometries and no right angles—appearing to hover above its 11-acre landscaped park. Built using over 1,500 uniquely molded FRP panels, the building merges cutting-edge tech with handcrafted finish.
Surrounding gardens by Studio-MLA feature more than 200 endemic trees, an amphitheater, pedestrian bridge, hanging gardens, and kinetic water features—transforming what was once parking lots into public green space.
Construction & Timeline
- Groundbreaking occurred in March 2018
- Originally targeting a 2021 opening, the timeline shifted due to pandemic delays; later postponed from 2023 to 2026
- As of summer 2025, the building is nearly complete and entering final phases, with public access expected in 2026.
Visitor Experience & Programming
The interior will include:
- Over 100,000 sq ft of gallery space across three levels
- Two theaters, educational studios, a library, a café, event spaces, and a retail store
This structure aims to foster community engagement, cultural dialogue, and creative learning—establishing itself as a hub for cross-generational storytelling.
TL;DR
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art promises to reshape how we value visual storytelling—merging Hollywood legacy with fine art, community, and architectural innovation. Whether you’re a museum-goer, film fan, or art aficionado, it’s poised to become L.A.’s next unmissable cultural destination.
