The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have announced a groundbreaking exhibition titled Art of Manga, set to run from September 27, 2025, to January 25, 2026, at the de Young Museum. This marks the first comprehensive exploration of manga as an art form in the United States, featuring over 700 original drawings from some of Japan’s most influential manga artists.

Among the showcased works are pieces by Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, a series renowned for its unique art style and imaginative storytelling. Visitors can also expect to see original drawings from Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece and Rumiko Takahashi’s Inuyasha, among others.

Many of these artworks have never been publicly displayed before, offering a rare glimpse into the creative processes behind these iconic series. The exhibition aims to deepen the understanding of manga as a unique visual medium that has captivated millions worldwide.

JoJo’s deep connection to fashion will also be a key focus. The series has drawn inspiration from high-fashion brands like VersaceVogueBalenciaga, and Gucci, and even recently collaborated with the luxury handbag brand Samantha Vega. The Art of Manga exhibit will showcase how Araki incorporates these influences into his characters’ bold outfits and dynamic poses, making JoJo stand out in the world of manga.

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, expressed enthusiasm about the exhibition, stating, “Captivating millions around the world with dynamic graphic narratives, manga is one of the most significant visual mediums of our time.”

Art of Manga not only celebrates the artistic achievements of these creators but also highlights the cultural exchange between Japan and the United States, particularly in the Bay Area. This exhibition promises to be a must-visit for both manga enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
