Sekiro Anime Adaptation Confirms Hand‑Drawn Animation – No AI Involved

At Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, Sekiro: No Defeat was officially unveiled—including a visceral trailer that not only teases intense swordplay but also highlights that the anime is fully hand-drawn 2D animation. Studio Qzil.la and its partners ARCH and Kadokawa made it clear: no AI tools were used in the production.

The statement came amid fan concerns sparked by animation oddities—leading to speculation about AI usage. Qzil.la addressed the rumors head-on, reaffirming their commitment to traditional animation methods and emphasizing that this adaption preserves the original game’s visual artistry and emotional weight.

A Stellar Creative Ensemble

Directed by Kenichi Kutsuna, known for work on Naruto and Gurren Lagann, and written by Takuya Satou, the project also features top-tier talents such as character designer Takahiro Kishida and action animation director Takashi Mukoda.

The anime reunites the original game’s voice actors: Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf (Sekiro), Miyuki Satou as Kuro (The Divine Heir), and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina—ensuring authenticity in delivery and tone.

Trailer visuals showcase a clash between Wolf and Genichiro Ashina, drenched in saturated color and kinetic action that evoke a gritty yet poetic execution of Sengoku-era Japan. Critics suggest the art direction blends nostalgia with fresh flair, enhancing the emotional resonance of the narrative.

When and Where to Watch

Fans will be able to stream Sekiro: No Defeat exclusively on Crunchyroll (excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus) in 2026—though an exact release date has yet to be announced.
