Cult Anime ‘Angel’s Egg’ Returns in Stunning 4K Restoration with New Trailer

The experimental anime Angel’s Egg, directed by Mamoru Oshii with character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, is returning to theaters in a beautifully restored 4K version. After premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, this haunting post-apocalyptic fantasy is set for North American theatrical release starting November 19, 2025, courtesy of GKIDS. The new restoration comes with an official trailer that teases its surreal and symbolic imagery.

Restoration Highlights

The restoration was personally overseen by director Mamoru Oshii. It honors the film’s 40th anniversary with renewed visual fidelity and a premiere at Cannes’ Cinéma de la Plage.

GKIDS will bring the remastered film to theaters on November 19, 2025. Prior to that, it will be featured at major festivals including Fantastic Fest and the New York Film Festival (NYFF).

A mesmerizing trailer has been released, offering first glimpses of the film’s dark, allegorical imagery and the atmospheric beauty that has made Angel’s Egg a cult classic.

About Angel’s Egg

Written and directed by Mamoru Oshii with striking character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, Angel’s Egg debuted in 1985 as a mystifying original OVA blending sparse dialogue with somber visual symbolism.

The film’s allegorical spirit—rich with Biblical allusions and surreal motifs—has earned it reverence among animation aficionados, despite its initially limited release and abstract narrative.

In addition to its theatrical run, Angel’s Egg is heading to streaming platforms like HBO Max later in 2025, marking its debut on wider streaming services.
