A new anime spin off called My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is set to premiere in Spring 2025, expanding the beloved franchise. Just in time, as the main My Hero Academia series is coming to an end with its eighth and final season next year.
The Story
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is a prequel to the main series, taking place five years before Izuku Midoriya (Deku) and his classmates start their journey to become heroes. This spinoff shows the world of heroes during a much grittier time when pro heroes weren’t as organized, and unlicensed vigilantes had to step up to handle the growing threats of criminals and villains.
The story follows Koichi Haimawari, a young man who recently graduated from school and isn’t sure what to do with his life. To pass the time, he begins helping out his community as an unlicensed hero known as “The Crawler.” At first, he does small tasks like giving directions or cleaning up trash, but things quickly escalate. Koichi soon finds himself facing serious dangers as he teams up with other unlicensed heroes to tackle bigger threats.
Along the way, the vigilantes encounter iconic pro heroes like All Might, Endeavor, and Mirko in their prime. Fans will also see younger versions of characters like Shota Aizawa (Eraser Head), Midnight, and others before they became full-fledged pros. The series even connects to major events in the main story, such as the origins of the terrifying Nomus, offering a fresh perspective on the MHA world.
Production
The spinoff will be animated by Studio Bones, the same studio behind the main My Hero Academia series, but through their new production branch, Bones Film. The show will be directed by Kenichi Suzuki, known for his work on other popular anime. Yosuke Kuroda, who wrote scripts for the original series, will return for this project. Fans can also look forward to the music composed by Yuki Hayashi, who worked on the main series as well.
