Australian band Tame Impala are heralded as new psych rock/alternative purveyors, and the band’s leader Kevin Parker has just announced that he came up with a new instrument – a synthesizer that appears to do a lot without taking up much space.
Parker and his friends who helped him develop it (its retro-futuristic design is by co-founder Ignacio Germade) originally conceived the instrument as a gadget for Parker’s own songwriting more than a decade ago.
“I often feel like a song has its own destiny,” says Parker. “Some kind of cosmic path that it takes — one that you’ve often got no control over. When you’re writing a song, an instrument is an interface between what’s on your mind and what you hear. You don’t always know it, but you know it when you hear it. Orchid helps you express what you’re hearing — or find the idea you were looking for.”
Part of the product description goes:
“Orchid is FOR CHORDS, meaning it offers a multitude of ways to shape, perform and alter these foundational musical elements while building new compositions. They include Performance modes such as Strum, Slop, Arpeggiator, Pattern and Harp, the latter of which mimics a harp being strummed to the sound of a given chord across a four-octave range.”
At first, there will be just 1,000 Orchids available for purchase in December at this link.
