Sugadaisy, Kentucky-bred and now Nashville-based, the group has released the southern fried psych-pop new single “Girlfriend.” An anthem for the yearning loverboys, the new track has a steadfast rhythm, effortlessly bobbing up and down like a wave in the ocean, but like all of Sugadaisy’s cuts, you think you know where it’s going until you don’t.
An electric guitar solo and a sprinkle of spacey synths add an unexpected layer to what can best be described as a mix of of Montreal and early Vampire Weekend. You can throw in Flaming Lips, Ween, Squeeze, Zappa and maybe even some Phish into that mix as well. Their sound has an element of instability – shape shifting in the way that the best Talking Heads songs did.
“Girlfriend” arrives after a year Sugadaisy spent on the road supporting The Heavy Heavy, Deer Tick, Rayland Baxter, Andy Frasco & the U.N. and St. Paul & The Broken Bones and playing festivals like SXSW, AMERICANAFEST and more. Next month, they’ll hit the road supporting Bendigo Fletcher.
At its core, Sugadaisy is the duo of Zach Littleton and Johny Lovan, friends since the third grade who started making music together in 2015. They bonded over a mutual appreciation of classic rock and Kevin Barnes’ constantly shapeshifting work as of Montreal. They came up in the rich Bowling Green music scene, watching bands like Cage The Elephant and Morning Teleportation experience success with their off-kilter energy and DIY mentality.
