What are the connections between science research and modern music forms such as electronic and post-rock?
Setting aside all the artificial intelligence controversies, there are not that many active artists out there that did parallel studies or scientific research connected to music.
One of the exceptions might be Danny Peck, formally a resident of Montague, Michigan who has been doing both for some three decades now. As a scientist, software developer and engineer, Peck has been researching the physics of music since the early 90s.
At the same time, he has been creating music under the monikers of dep, A Defiant Heart, and most recently, under his given name, where Where Hope Goes, Fear Follows is his latest release.
And while on his previous releases Peck relied heavily on tracker-driven music, here Peck decided to move away from tracker sequencers, completely changing his equipment, at the same time, completely reinventing his music too.
Sure, it is still based on electronics, but Peck has now gone into a post-rock territory that has more to do with the likes of Godspeed! You Black Emperor, or Mogwai if either of those went fully ‘symphonic’ rather than your usual set of artist working within the ambient or EDM genres.
That ‘fully orchestrated’ sound permeates all of the ten compositions here but instead of just simply going through the motions, Peck adds an e to those motions, making his fully engaging not just to himself but to his listeners too, something not easily found these days in electronically created music.
