Ahead of the single’s official release on the 18th, we’re premiering Wylderness’ new single “Big Idea.” Wylderness, the Cardiff-based shoegaze outfit known for their atmospheric soundscapes and rich guitar-driven textures, blend sun-soaked pop sensibilities with the signature fuzzed-out, stabbing guitars that define shoegaze.
“Big Idea” is a fresh addition to the band’s catalog and an anthem in its own right. The track’s warmth and layered intricacies offer an instant appeal, echoing the sounds of Ride, DIIV, Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo.
With “Big Idea,” Wylderness has honed in on a unique sound that both nods to the past and pushes forward. Building off the timeless foundations of shoegaze and pop, the track layers bright chords with a wall of reverb-heavy guitar effects, creating an almost dreamlike soundscape. The song’s resonant bass line and persistent drum rhythm ground its ethereal qualities, while frontman Ian’s soft, melodic vocals float just above the mix, pulling listeners into a trance.
Wylderness’ eponymous debut album, released in 2018, was championed by Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music), Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and was part of Radio 1’s Best of BBC Music Introducing. It garnered critical acclaim from Clash, DIY and Drowned in Sound, with the song “On a Dais” being featured on the US version of the TV show Shameless.
Wylderness are Ian (guitars/vocals), Jim (bass/guitars), Ben (drums/percussion), Dan (guitars/vocals), and Harri (clarinet/keys).
