Rungano Nyoni won Best Director at Cannes

A24 is back with a new look at their upcoming film, On Becoming A Guinea Fowl, written and directed by Rungano Nyoni.

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl is a dark comedy about family secrets starring Susan Chardy, Elizabeth Chisela and Henry B.J. Phiri. It is a co-production between Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zambia.

The Plot:

On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family, in filmmaker Rungano Nyoni’s surreal and vibrant reckoning with the lies we tell ourselves.

Guinea Fowl was a festival darling this year and even netted Rungano Nyoni the coveted Best Director prize at Cannes. With her 2017 directorial debut I Am Not a Witch, Rungano Nyoni established herself as a filmmaker worth paying attention to.

Following its Cannes debut, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl screened at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Critics praised the film for sensitively handling the topic of generational clashes in traditional cultures.

It was originally scheduled to be released by A24 in the United States on December 13, 2024, but has been delayed to March 7, 2025.
