Hideaki Anno Reveals an Exciting New Space Battleship Yamato Film is in the Works

Announced during a special 50th-anniversary screening of the series

Famous anime director Hideaki Anno announced that his studio, Khara, is creating a new project related to the classic anime Space Battleship Yamato. This announcement came during a special 50th-anniversary screening of the original series, which was created by Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto

Hideaki Anno has announced that his studio, Khara, will create new anime footage for a Space Battleship Yamato project, having received permission from the rights holders, Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation.

Although specific details about the project remain under wraps, Anno indicated that it will differ from the ongoing remake series Space Battleship Yamato 2199, although Yutaka Izubuchi, who is also working on the remakes, will be involved in this new venture. Production is set to begin in 2025, with hopes of a theatrical release afterward.

Hideaki Anno, who is well-known for his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion and films like Shin Godzilla, has been a fan of Space Battleship Yamato for nearly 50 years. He shared that this series greatly inspired him and shaped his love for anime. He fondly recalled how, as a kid, he chose to watch Yamato over other shows, even missing episodes of popular series like Great Mazinger to catch every moment of Yamato.

The original Space Battleship Yamato follows the journey of a battleship that is brought back to life as a spaceship to protect Earth from alien threats. The first series aired in October 1974, and the franchise has been a huge success, earning a lot of money at the box office and achieving high TV ratings over the years.
