There’s a relatively new genre sweeping over and making a big splash with a highly receptive audience: spiritual relaxation.

Maybe it is the hard times, spurred by the pandemic, or it might be primarily the online streaming, where the number of listeners that need music to relax to, meditate to, or whatever to is growing by the day.

Of course, with any music that has a specific purpose, there’s always more of it that is functioning like cotton candy ― it looks (sounds) all fluffy and shiny, but when you bite/listen into it there isn’t much substance there.

There are more artists (if you can call them that) out there trying to exploit the genre (some streaming services even use fake artists) than those trying to make purposeful music that will give you space to relax or meditate along with and still bring along musical substance.

On ‘Sacred Spiral,’ composer Yval Ron and vocalist Úyanga Bold, with a wide array of contributing musicians, actually do the latter. They are able to combine music that has the substance that you can listen to, but also delivers sounds that will do the relaxation/meditation purpose with a spiritual tonality within.

Ron is able to weave around Bold’s intricate voice a series of instruments that can evoke the relaxation/meditative elements without actually depriving them of their musicality ― from sitar and digeridoo to cello and gongs.

All the instruments used have unique tonalities, but they are blended in without being pushed to the forefront or suppressing Bold’s quite unique voice.

If you are looking for an album that will have that relaxing feel for your next jog without turning into aural wallpaper, Sacred Spiral might be the right choice.
