What currently constitutes Americana music is an open-ended debate and it will remain so for a while. Yet what seasoned veterans led by frontman, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski that operate under the name of The California Honeydrops come up with on their new album Soft Spot certainly does.

The band, which has been together for 14 years now have a quite unique style that draws from roots, Bay Area R&B, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second line, and it is all covered here with both excellence and style.

All this comes from being able to play and tour with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Allen Toussaint, Buddy Guy, and Dr. John no less.

It all shows on Soft Spot, a set of sophisticated songs that cover a lot of ground with ease as if the Honeydrops are using a single chord throughout. And it still sounds like all of the above diverse genres that we can certainly cover with the term (sophisticated) Americana.
