People tend to forget how many astounding female soul/R&B singers have come up from the British Isles – from Dusty Springfield back in the ’60s, to Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone in more recent times.

It was not only their vocal capabilities but also the ability to bring true emotion or should we say soul into their interpretations and also some brilliant songwriting from some of them.

Well, we just might see/hear one more such female artist from the British Isles in Manchester’s Mica Millar, who has her debut album Heaven Knows released.

Of course, the first thing that strikes the listener here is Millar’s excellent vocals throughout the album, where Millar keeps on pouring her emotions into every note she sings. It also happens that Millar sticks to that old, tried, and true school of soul songwriting, the one that hits the right notes every single time.

Yet, for such vocals and songwriting to be effective, you have to have a sophisticated and truly versed set of backing musicians which she gets with artists who themselves have played with the likes of Whitney Huston, Nile Rogers, Prince, Fleetwood Mac, and quite a few others.

As a final result, with Mica Millar’s Heaven Knows we get some excellent old-school soul for modern times.
