Los Angeles emcee Nemesis (also a member of the hip-hop duo Pure Order) got her stage name well back in the early days of the current century, when she started out in battles and sessions in the schoolyard.
This gave her ample time to hone her art, and firmly decide that she likes the old school style the best, keeping away from the more charts-oriented hip hop. As she amply shows on “INNOV8!,” her latest single firmly stays with her original influences like Rakim, Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Wu Tang Clan, KRS One, Missy Elliott, and MC Lyte.
Still, as the title of the single implies, the key is not in standing still, but in bringing up ‘the classics’ up to new times, both with the beats and the lyrical content.
It seems that her key idea here is to come up with a statement “ about elevating to higher levels of self mentally, emotionally, and spiritually – “Thoughts + Beats = INNOV8!” Yet, good rhythms, should also imply movement, dancing, so to thoughtfulness, Nemesis seems to add, why not dance along?
Her previous two singles both charted #1 and #2 on the college radio hip hop chart (http://RapAttackLives.com ), and it will be no wonder if this one does the same.
