Hillsboro Texas rapper J’Moris is no stranger to the music scene. Under his belt, he’s got an album (Blac February released 2020), five EP’s and 7 singles.
From his life experience and the music he has released so far, he seems to have come up with one of the combinations that are the hardest workout in hip hop – how to combine ‘blunt force’ encountered in real life and expressed through the lyrics, with some finesse, i.e. downtempo grooves that at the same time do not rely simply on beat samples.
As he puts it himself, “Watching my loved ones fall victim to the drugs or the streets, I felt he only had one choice. Use them both to my advantage & find a way out. My older brother, Crunch, looked out for me a lot. He never wanted me in the streets but he also knew the outcome was inevitable. He showed me how to finesse the game more, how to be a part of the game but also be hands-off.. Unseen.. The lessons he taught me molded me into who I am today and also gave me the opportunities to graduate high school. Something he, or my little brother J Hodge, never did.”
“Activated,” his latest single seems to confirm all that. The trap-heavy track starts off with a classically tinged piano coda that repeats through the track, allowing J’Moris to weave his story in style. The weariness in his voice adds another touch that makes the track really work.
An excellent continuation of an already solid body of releases by J’Moris.
