Tim Hussman, Austin, Texas electronic artist that operates under the name of 1st Base Runner has been busy lately, coming up with a duo of intriguing singles this year.
Both “All Thoughts” and “Break Even” take a similar pattern, that has more connection with dark, brooding dream-pop electronica than with a more EDM, dance-oriented material that currently dominates the electronic music scene. Both singles are more about creating an atmosphere, a feeling, with some deep-toned vocals and detailed electronic arrangements that do not dominate the songs but give the vocals the exact support they need.
Of the two, “All Thoughts” seemingly has more pace, while “Break Even” is that dark horse, with a sound that many electronic musicians attempt to try to create, but quite often do not come up with the goods like 1st Base Runner does. If you need any comparisons, electronic music legends Massive Attack, and UNKLE might be a good starting point.
The reason why Hussman, the mastermind of the project, is able to deliver, probably lies in the fact that he is a seasoned artist who has worked with quite a number of international artists playing drums, synths, and arranging electronic live setups. But then he went on a seven-year artistic hiatus to re-think his career and artistic direction.
Both singles are precursors to the forthcoming album and EP Hussman is to release as 1st Base Runner this year.
