Deadline is reporting that Martin Scorsese, will direct a Grateful Dead biopic starring his longtime friend and collaborator Jonah Hill in the role of the band’s guitarist/vocalist/songwriter and most prominent figure Jerry Garcia. The fill doesn’t yet have a working title, but it is known that it will be produced for Apple TV+.
Apple reportedly has permission to use the band’s music in the film. According to the sources, this is not such a big surprise as the executive producers are Garcia’s living bandmates Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann alongside Eric Eisner, Bernie Cahill, and Garcia’s daughter Trixie.
“Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who wrote the hit limited TV series American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, are penning the script. Scorsese and Hill are also credited as producers, as is Rick Yorn.”
This would not be the first time that Scorsese is working on a Grateful Dead-themed project, as he has directed the Grateful Dead chronicle Long Strange Trip, as well as quite a few other musical documentaries. Yet, this upcoming project will be his first musician biopic.
