It seems that the definition of what constitutes a single as a term has shifted back to its primary meaning. Nowadays, singles are more or less exactly that, single tracks, suited for streaming, inserting into playlists, and similar online (or offline) acrobatics.
Back in the earlier decades of pop/modern music, a single would be something that would fit onto a 7” plastic thingy that bore that name and included two (or eventually three tracks, if the space permitted).
So, basically, it became a true rarity these days, when artists would decide to include two (or more) tracks for their latest release and dub it ‘a single.’
That rarity obviously didn’t deter, electronic/experimental artist WooliebuGGer to come up with two new tracks, and you can call them a single, two singles, or a double single, which makes no difference.
Listening to the two tracks/singles/double single you can quickly realize why the aptly named artist decided to make such a release. If he opted just for one of the two it just might serve as a snippet of what he has to offer on his latest album, Stellar Communication.
The electronic music he is creating, his take on the so-called Braindance/IDM branch of electronics created in the ’90s, needs time to expand and explore. Presenting two such tracks gives a much better idea of where WooliebuGGer is both coming from and going to.
And it seems that he is coming from the right place, inspired by those brilliant British electronica explorers Board of Canada, something the Illinois artist is quite open about.
At the same time, WooliebuGGer is obviously an explorer that doesn’t stand still and is trying to build his own view on his original inspiration. This just might be the right approach to entice the potential audience to explore his other releases.
