“Losing Breath” by Rocket will have you wondering what year it is – 2020 or the 90s, which is interesting, being that the song is like a snapshot of the current civil unrest and socio-political turmoil.
“Losing Breath” exudes an old-school rebellious punk/rock feel, powered by bad-ass guitar riffs and sections and vocals. The unhinged, bad-boy vibe (or bad-girl vibe since the vocals are female) is somewhat reminiscent of Guns and Roses’ golden years, as if it has a pinch of “Welcome to the Jungle,” especially considering that the current time the song is sparked by feels very much like a jungle where anarchy is the only king. You can definitely imagine Slash blasting out the short guitar solo in the middle, which breaks the song up beautifully like a breath of dirty rock air.
The rebellion is most palpable in the vocals, which strike a very nice balance between melody, light screams, and simply sounding cool, as any punk-rock vocals should.
Overall, “Losing Breath” is a very fun punk-rock song with a message – a combination that’s never easy to pull off.
