Okito, who has so far made a name for himself as one of Florida’s most innovative hip-hop producers, now takes on a new role of an original performer and vocalist that doesn’t feel new at all. On the contrary, it seems as the next natural step in his artistic evolution. His debut single, “SenDatNegga,” oozes confidence, authenticity, and swag that are usually characteristic of more mature performers.
“SenDatNegga” gets your head bobbing practically from the very first beat. The whole song is a hip hop delight, or even just a delight period, with beautiful female backing vocals that provide a very gentle contrast to Okito’s more aggressive, brash tone. The short, but sweet sound effects and slick riffs that sneak around throughout the song make its charge all-the-sexier and cooler.
“SenDatNegga” feels like an explosion of black, hip-hop consciousness, a blast from the past, the kind of song you’d expect the head honcho in an ’80s movie to make his first appearance to. Just a cool, cool song. We eagerly look forward to more where that came from, with is Okito’s forthcoming album, Dystopian Heart, dropping September 14.
