By default, stories about retired assassins building normal lives are funny. We’ve seen this play out most prominently in HBO’s excellent dark comedy, Barry, with Bill Hader cast as a former hitman.
It’s hard not to get a similar vibe off of Nobody, a crime thriller that looks to be of the same ilk as, say, John Wick and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The film stars Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad) as an ex-assassin living a picturesque suburban life before he unwittingly gets the attention of a drug lord after saving a young woman from a band of hoodlums.
The trailer for Nobody just dropped, and you can watch it below:
If the film looks like it’s ripped straight out of the pages of a John Wick movie, it’s because it’s written by the same guy, Derek Kolstad. One scene where Odenkirk’s character goes guns-a-blazin’ with the same cutesy motivation that almost directly references John Wick.
“Give me the goddamn kitty-kat bracelet,” he exclaims. It’s funny stuff.
The John Wick references don’t end there either. The film’s promotional poster is a direct callback to the movies, specifically John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017).
Nobody is directed by Ilya Naishuller, who directed the 2015 cult hit, Hardcore Henry. The film stars Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, J.P. Manou, Humberly González, and more.
Nobody opens in theaters February 26, 2020.
