The announcement came from Disney Investor Day 2020, a 3-hour webcast that happened on Thursday, December 10th, 2020. FX’s chief John Landgraf promises a “scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth”, and later adding:
“By blending both the timeless horror of the first Alien film with the non-stop action of the second, it’s going to be a scary thrill ride that will blow people back in their seats.”
This is curious, in that Ridley Scott’s seminal science fiction classic, Alien, depicted outer space as a stiflingly vast void, an inconvenient setting to bunker with a lethal Xenomorph in. The iconic tagline for the 1979 classic reinforces this idea. “In space, no one can hear you scream.”
But Alien…on Earth? That, for sure, will keep Alien fans on their toes. Suffice it to say, this new vision will likely deviate from what the films have established.
While the prospect of an Earth-bound Alien story might raise a few flags, I’d be remiss not to remind everyone that Noah Hawley (creator of excellent shows like Fargo and Legion) is at the helm. Ridley Scott is also in talks to serve as executive producer.
Alien will premiere as an FX on Hulu offering sometime in 2021.
