A documentary on the magic of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki is streaming free

The films themselves are available on Netflix and later on HBO Max

Anybody who has had a chance to see Spirited Away, possibly one of the best-animated films of its time, will surely enjoy a four-part documentary on its creator Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, its production team. Creative Bloq reports that all four parts are now available free to stream on the NHK website (CB). NHK is the Japanese broadcasting company behind the documentary.

As CB puts it, the Studio Ghibli production “in a world of digital effects, its mostly hand-drawn aesthetics are a breath of fresh air, and offer an escape from the real world that’s particularly welcome right now.”

The documentary titled 10 Years With Hayao Miyazaki was originally released in 2019 and “chronicles the life and creative process of the legendary Japanese animator.”

“The documentary was over a decade in the making. Starting in 2088, Miyazaki allowed a single documentary filmmaker to shadow him at work as he devised what would become his blockbuster, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. As well as exploring his creative process, the documentary sheds some light on Miyazaki’s personal life. “

Currently, the Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films are now available on Netflix in most parts of the world starting from April 1, 2020. This currently excludes USA and Canada, but the viewers there will be able to see these films on HBO Max which launches in May 2020.
