Trailer Roundup 1/21-2/3

Documentaries have been making a big splash this past year or so and this latest one about Apollo 11 looks absolutely stunning. We don’t often get an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the goings on at NASA, let alone this historic launch. And the way they seem to have been able to restore this never before seen footage is breathtaking, almost surreal. Russian Doll has been making a lot of noise as possibly being the next big thing for Netflix, and rightfully so. The ‘Groundhog Day’ shtick may be a tried and true one by now, but this series looks like it could breathe some real life into the genre with its unique humor and apparent tale from two different perspectives. As a culture we certainly have a fascination with true crime, and serial killers in particular, and probably none more so than Ted Bundy. So it’s actually a wonder that we haven’t gotten more feature films about him, but Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile looks to change all of that. Aside from that atrocious title, I’m not so sure about the overall tone of it, as the trailer seems too lighthearted for how horrific the actual crimes were, but Zac Efron, while a surprising casting choice, could actually pull off an impressive performance. He certainly has the onscreen charisma for it.

It’s almost a wonder that there are still comic books out there that haven’t been adapted for screen yet, but they keep on coming with seemingly no end in sight. I’m unfamiliar with The Umbrella Academy property but Netflix looks like they could have a real winner on their hands and a legitimate replacement for all of those canceled Marvel series. Super stylish, great casting, and some interesting looking group dynamics. Looks like a more f*cked up version of the X-Men – count me in. At this point, Fast & Furious has thrown all sense of realism and groundedness (is that a word?) to the wind so it only makes sense that super powers would be the next stop. Or hell, space. So seeing this new Hobbs & Shaw go up against a bulletproof, superhuman Idris Elba is all par for the course. It’s so utterly absurd and over-the-top that you basically have no choice but to see it. I hate that I don’t hate this more.
