The last week of December was understandably light on high-profile new music videos but we did still get some of note starting with Birdman and the self-proclaimed King of R&B Jacquees (yeah I know lol) revisiting their last joint album mixtape ep project with their ode to Miami. It’s one of the better songs off the tape, thanks in large part to the minimal Birdman inclusion, but the video for it is about as generic early-2000s R&B as a video can be. LNDN DRGS had a strong 2018 that they only made even stronger after revisiting their debut with some new heat. “TOMORROW” was a standout from that new batch of songs (Gibbs has definitely been on a roll this year) and the video for it, with its vintage aesthetics, perfectly captures that feel good, summer cookout vibe of the song as a whole. The whole YBN click has made a lot of noise over this past year (for equal parts music and fuckery), with YBN Nahmir in particular standing out as one of the faces of the crew. Aside from the obvious visual similarities, I get vibes of early Wiz Khalifa from him and I’d be lying if I said “Porsches In The Rain”, despite its super low-budget video, didn’t go.
In time for the holidays, Rae Sremmurd hit us with a pair of Christmas themed singles, and while Slim Jxmmi’s was of the more turnt up variety, Swae Lee continues to try to flex his vocal muscles, and while I appreciate the effort and the songwriting isn’t terrible – the parts where we actually hear him without auto-tune are. That’s gonna be a no from me dog. And he’s wasn’t the only one with a Christmas themed offering, as Post Malone’s latest video is reminiscent of those old animated Christmas specials with the twist being that they’re all in the form of the things that seem to run through his mind – face tats, red bulls, gold grills, and the such. You know, bro stuff. Say what you want about him but he definitely knows how to make a hit and “Wow.” is yet another one.
