With a ceremony held on May 4 ,2019 and with all the living members present, as Staten Island Advance reported, a Park Hill corner of Clifton neighborhood on New York’s Staten Island was renamed in honor of, as Digital Music News puts it, “The Wu-Tang Clan, arguably Staten Island’s greatest cultural export.”
The New York City Council made the decision back in December of 2018, with a unanimous vote and was warmly received by Staten Island residents. Along with the presence of the Wu-Tang Clan, the official ceremony unveiled the official signs and placards, along with speeches, performances, presentations and an after-party. One of the new street signs was placed at the intersection of Targee Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, “in the heart of the newly-named section.”
According to the Staten Island Advance, Councilwoman Debbie Rose declared that, “this is a great day where we have an opportunity to honor our own hometown heroes, the young men who put Staten Island on the map internationally. They overcame all types of challenges, to not only become rap artists and hip-hop artists but to inspire and challenge the music world.”
Digital Music News also points out that, “the group’s unique style, inspired by Kung Fu flicks and outright irreverence for tradition, spurred a movement that ultimately spawned several successful solo careers.”
Along with RZA, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and Cappadonna, Bar-son Jones, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s son took part in the ceremony.
