Will there be a ‘Joker’ sequel after all?

Ever since 'Joker' took the world by storm, there has been one question in everyone's mind...

Considering the film was declared a one-off from the get-go, and with the film’s director Todd Phillips saying he doesn’t think they’d make a second one, this question seemed more like wishful thinking than a real possibility. Until rumors from The Hollywood Reporter started circulating the Internet, claiming otherwise.

According to this THR article from November 20, not only is a sequel “on the way,” but on October 7, Phillips went into Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich’s office, “buoyed by the film’s $96.2 million opening-weekend haul,” proposing “an outsized idea — the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters’ origin stories.”

However, Deadline quickly put a damper on fans’ excitement with a conflicting story.

To settle things once and for all, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn sat down Phillips.

For one, rather than marching in the Warner Bros. office, asking for a “portfolio of DC characters’ origin stories,” Phillips actually pitched the actual film Joker, along with “a series of darker, more character-focused comic book films.”

“First of all, if you know me and my career, that’s not my style. I made a huge comedy at Warner Bros., ‘The Hangover,’ and I didn’t suddenly become a comedy factory producer, like, oh, let’s just churn out movies,” Phillips explains IndieWire.

As for the Joker sequel, unfortunately, even though such talk between the people involved in the film did take place in casual settings like dinners, as it naturally would when a film makes a billion dollars, and Phillips and Phoenix toyed with the idea on set, the actual sequel talk in the media space was mostly fake news.

“Here’s the real truth about a sequel,” Phillips said. “While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’ But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best,” Phillips tells IndieWire.

Of course, us fans can still dream.
